The Southern Ocean has a treasure to offer; discover it on your Antarctic vacation. On board the MS Ocean Nova, you will sail to remote islands during these three weeks. On the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and finally the Antarctic Peninsula, you will encounter extraordinary creatures in extreme biotopes. You can't experience Antarctica more intensively than this!
28.02 - 20.03.2022 (English, Swedish, German)
First day: Arrival at Ushuaia. Overnight in a hotel.
Second day: Embarkation and start of the expedition.
Third to penultimate day: On expedition cruise... Ice, weather and wildlife observation will determine the route.
Last day: Disembarkation at Ushuaia and return home.
At the very south of the American double continent lies Ushuaia, in the middle of Tierra del Fuego's maze of islands. This Argentine city clings to the flank of the snow-capped mountain range, Montes Martial.
Ushuaia is the springboard for your Antarctic getaway. This is where expedition cruises depart for the south.
Before boarding your ship, pay a visit to the world's southernmost national park; home to guanacos, Andean jackals and numerous bird species such as the Magellanic woodpecker - one of the largest woodpeckers in the world.
Your Antarctic vacation begins. The Ocean Nova sets sail, leaves Ushuaia behind, passes the Beagle Channel and sets course for the Falkland Islands. Already you have the opportunity to look for birds. Magellanic penguins are looking for food here. Albatrosses sail by and petrels show how elegantly they connect sea and sky.
Until you reach the Falkland Islands, our polar experts will offer you their first lectures. You can be assured that you will learn polar knowledge at first hand! How long can whales dive? Why don't polar bears live in Antarctica? Where did Ernest Shackleton go? You will see Antarctica with different eyes.
After about 700 kilometers and almost two days at sea, the western Falkland Islands come into view. Here we want to go ashore for the first time. Where exactly, captain and expedition leader decide depending on wind and weather. That's the appeal and the great opportunity of expedition cruises: to be flexible in order to offer you a perfect experience.
There are plenty of places to do this: Carcass Island, for example. Or Saunders Island. Here it is possible to see four species of penguins at once, raising their offspring in peaceful neighborhood.
After visiting Stanley, the main town of the Falkland Islands, the Ocean Nova continues southeast. South Georgia is the next destination. It is getting colder, you can feel the frost of the South Pole blowing up.
Here in the Southern Ocean it is worth keeping your eyes open. The waters are rich in fish and krill; the table is set for seabirds, seals and whales. With the help of your guides, you'll quickly learn to tell a blue whale from a humpback. Just by the shape of its exhaled air!
On the eighth day of your expedition, South Georgia looms on the horizon. Either the silhouette slowly and mystically creeps out of the fog. Or the mountains and glaciers stand out hard and clear against the Antarctic sky. Both have an unreal charm.
South Georgia is a paradise for animals: Hundreds of thousands of penguins nest here. And huge elephant seals fight on the beach for the best opportunity to mate. And you can be right in the middle of it!
We continue towards Antarctica. Now the first icebergs appear: Giants of frozen water, stoically drifting towards their melting. Depending on ice conditions and weather, the Ocean Nova heads for the Antarctic Peninsula. It is, after all, one of the most extreme regions on our planet. But you can rely on the experience of your team!
And here, too, the possibilities are numerous to offer you. For example the South Shetland Islands with Elephant Island. Or the extinct volcano on Deception Island.
Finally, explore the Antarctic Peninsula with its ice shelves and massive icebergs - breathtaking scenery! The means of choice are Zodiacs, small, robust boats - without these, nothing would work here.
But at some point, your Antarctic vacation will end and the Ocean Nova will head north again. After three weeks of Antarctic adventure, you will reach Ushuaia again.
