    South Georgia

With best regards from South Georgia

The archipelago of South Georgia is far away from home. Protected from the sheer distance of the civilized world and bad weather. But South Georgia is also a paradise on the way to Antarctica. Experience for yourself the contrast and rough charm.

    Aphrodite of the Antarctic

Granted, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, may have been more graceful. But how much better does the image of a creature born out of the sea spray fit on a seal? These animals work their way through the waves to rest on the beach or give birth to their young. This makes them mediators between sea and land. They connect the elements. And nowhere else can you observe this more vividly than on South Georgia. Antarctic fur seals live here, as do crab eaters and Weddell seals.

But many visitors only come here because of a very specific species: the elephant seals. They are the largest seal species in the world. True giants! They dive up to 2000 meters deep on their hunting trips.

Even for newcomers to this region of the world, the sexes are easy to distinguish: The males are more than three times as heavy as the females and also have a distinctive trunk on their face. On the beach there is a boss, a dominant bull, who jealously looks after his harem. Unfortunately, he is also not as nimble as Aphrodite. With his more than three tons of weight, he crushes the one or other pup of the previous year in the love-rush.
